Social Media is Trending the Wrong Way
The social media platform BlueSky reckons 4 million new users have come over from X (Twitter) since Trump got re-elected.
I’ve had an account on BlueSky for a while but only check it sporadically. I try to limit my social media consumption, and X remains the best platform for my relevant interests (Ukraine, AI, Tech, etc), despite the change in ownership.
I did check BlueSky yesterday out of interest and I’ve noticed a significant change. Rather than being a ‘safe place’ as is the general consensus, it has now become a left-wing echo chamber. You can probably train the algorithm to remove political content, but that takes work. I talked in a previous post about my efforts on X to remove political content from my feed, of any persuasion.
The bifurcation of social media platforms along political lines is a worrying trend. Mastodon is better, but it still hasn’t caught on for the majority of accounts I’m interested in following. There is still a slight technical barrier. I’ve said before, the network-effect always wins.
