Britain on the Bayside
In the mood for a bit of nostalgia, we took a drive to the Britain on the Bayside shop in Birkdale, which is now only 10 mins drive away. We had heard about this place before but had never got round to going. Britain on the Bayside boasts of the largest selection of british goods in Queensland. I must say, it was a nice trip down memory lane but an expensive one. With everything imported the items aren't cheap, but as a treat now and again it's great.
Some of the things we came away with include Golden Shred Marmalade, Lemon Curd, Bisto Gravy, Vimto, Walnut Whip, and Starburst sweets. We even bought a couple of pork pies and a Beef and Guiness Pie which is made locally by a British butcher. I also brought some british Cadbury's chocolate as the Cadbury's chocolate in Australia just doesn't taste the same. The stuff over here tastes like that cheap chocolate you get in crappy Easter Eggs.
The best bit was that I discovered that the bottle shop next door sells imported British bitters, including John Smith's Extra Smooth and Boddingtons. After always being a Bitter drinker it's been rough for the last 2 years having to drink the piss they call beer in Australia. Saying that, it's funny that you hardly ever see Fosters Lager over here, you only seem to get that in the UK. Even the Aussies turn their nose up at Fosters! Unfortunately, a pack of 4 John Smith's Extra Smooth cost me $18 so I don't think it will be a weekly treat.
Another bonus, Britain on the Bayside sells Liverpool FC branded stuff, oh, and Man Utd, but I can't imagine anyone would want to buy that :-)
